Concrete – the flooring of the future

Rug-1Flooring creates the backdrop to your entire home. And the right or wrong choice can make or break your interior. Timber flooring has been a favourite for years now – it’s stylish, contemporary and easy to care for. But now there’s a new kid on the block when it comes to flooring – polished concrete.

Urban chic
Polished concrete could add a real touch of industrial chic to your home. Urban and minimalist or cool and contemporary, it’s a practical and hardwearing finish that creates an ultra-modern twist yet complements most interior design styles.

Flooring creates the backdrop to your entire home. And the right or wrong choice can make or break your interior. Urban chic

Polished concrete could add a real touch of industrial chic to your home. Urban and minimalist or cool and contemporary, it’s a practical and hardwearing finish that creates an ultra-modern twist yet complements most interior design styles.

It works in most rooms – kitchens and bathrooms are obvious choices but it’s a great option for living areas and bedrooms too. Polished to a marble-like finish, concrete can be surprisingly beautiful, revealing shimmering variations in colour and pattern and reflecting light around your room.

Add warmth with colourful textiles (and underfloor heating!)

To avoid polished concrete looking cold, the key is to use plenty of rugs and fabrics to soften the look and inject colour and texture.
A bold rug, for example, will bring bring vibrant colour into your room and create a real style statement. And it will add that essential warmth and comfort underfoot. Jewel coloured cushions and throws on your sofas and chairs will also help to create a warm and relaxing space.

On the practical side, clearly concrete is a cold surface but it holds heat well so make sure you have underfloor heating installed for the best of both worlds.

Fun and functional….

To complete the urban-look, maybe add some modern design classics – some simple metal fisherman lights, a retro glass coffee table, an anglepoise lamp. The aim is to create a contemporary feel that doesn’t compromise on comfort.

Use your imagination

Concrete can also be used for other surfaces – concrete tiles can make tactile and interesting wall coverings and concrete is a modern and practical solution for kitchen worktops too.

Design is all about having fun. So why not think about how unusual materials could create a real impact in your home, whatever your style.
